Winebar + Cafe in Ancient Roman Interiorscape

Vegas is the ultimate collage. It encompasses from Egyptian Pyramids to the Eiffel tower to Venice to Ancient Rome. It is an architectural fiction where the only constant is excess. The proposal for the Winebar + Café within Ceasars’ Palace interrupts the Roman interiorscape with a modern wine + coffee bar. Maximizing the potential for social interaction, are round banquettes, a subtly curving drink rail, communal hightops and a circular bar. The center is punctured by an existing statue of Caesar himself. Periodically, the lights dim for the laser show. Because it’s Vegas.

Coffee Laboratory + Lounge

Australian coffee hits the streets of Williamsburg. The bold move in to the heart of hipster territory is backed by a devoted following the other side of the Pacific. Toby’s Estate operates independent of cultural and social influences - it’s more fun to make your own rules.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/1231276/tobys 2_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/1231276/tobys 2_o.jpg" data-mid="16340428" border="0" align="left"/>

nemaworkshop is designing the US flagship for Australia's leading coffee empire. Not your average coffee shop, Toby's estate is the epicenter of coffee knowledge. The baristas know their roasts and are willing to share the entire timeline of your coffee from bean to brew. The production process culminates with a giant coffee roaster on display for particularly enthusiastic pupils. The space itself nurtures exploration, investigation, and social interaction. Laboratory and living room merge into space which is expository, comfortable and ultimately fresh as the coffee.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/1231276/tobys 3_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/1231276/tobys 3_o.jpg" data-mid="16340434" border="0" align="left"/>

The entrance into the space follows a ramp which leads the guest to a wood bar with marble top, designed to maximize the social interaction between client and barista. Since Toby’s Estate not only serves coffee but educates about coffee, the roaster is on display and viewed through a glass window is a space dedicated to tasting subtle bean and roasting distinctions – The Cupping Room. The main space hosts a variety of seating options including a high top communal table and a super long chesterfield banquette.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/1231276/tobys 4_9_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/1231276/tobys 4_9_o.jpg" data-mid="16342179" border="0" align="left"/>

From the exterior the space reads as a stage: it is elevated from the street and the shelf-lined walls taper toward the bar. The exaggerated perspective presents the activities as a performance. Though the performance in this case is more of an everyday, local, kicked-back flavor.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/1231276/AU55_edited2_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/1231276/AU55_edited2_o.jpg" data-mid="5949878" border="0" align="left"/>

Formerly a meat locker, the Williamsburg space is designed to become a comfortable, casual environment for neighbors to connect with one another. While typically coffee shops are more of a thoroughfare, Toby’s Estate is a coffee lounge, an open invitation to the neighborhood.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/651772/MODEL ROOM CONVEX_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/651772/MODEL ROOM CONVEX_o.jpg" data-mid="17581582" border="0" align="left"/>

Hidden down cobblestone streets, behind the historical facades and balconies of the French Quarter, a mysterious underground universe lingers. From the tarot reader who reads cards in the flickering shadows thrown from a gas lamp to the soothsayer whispering voodoo charms, the allure of magic and mystery is intoxicating. Meanwhile, jazz pulses through the veins of the French quarter, spilling out of homes and clubs throughout the neighborhood. Moody jazz is the soundtrack to this alternate reality, laden with secrets, mystery and unusual perspectives. A place where vision is not about what you see but what you perceive. As the rite continues, dancing ensues in public spaces while in candlelit corners clandestine meetings and tarot cards unfold. Throughout the evening, secrets are kept, offerings made and mysteries revealed.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/651772/pins_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/651772/pins_o.jpg" data-mid="17581910" border="0" align="left"/>

Drawing on the culture of New Orleans and more specifically the subtexts of Dark Arts, Tarot and Jazz, the guestrooms capture a particular atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. Anchoring the design to the physical context are the chevron floor pattern and the shutters. While they link W guestroom and historic residences of the French Quarter, the gold accent in the chevron floor pattern injects it with the W DNA. The clean, low, high-gloss white millwork establishes a modern framework for the design. The corner not only redefines the room architecturally, creating a new volume it also allows light to spill into the space. The interior graphic is an image which wraps the interior volume while simultaneously asserting one of the three storylines.

The firey copper bathroom relates to not only the gas-lit fountain in the W courtyard but more largely the play between fire and water occurring throughout the French Quarter. Gas lanterns line the cobblestone alleys and inside intimate courtyard gardens water splashes and fire flickers in the fountains.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/651772/bathroom_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/651772/bathroom_o.jpg" data-mid="17582014" border="0" align="left"/>

The minibar presents itself as a W interpretation of an altar. The reflective faceted box isolates and frames portions of the image – as you reach for the door you might find her mouth which might shift to become a portion of her ear. Whereas a traditional altar would have candles lining the top surface, this top surface is an illuminated plane. Opposite, the convex mirror expands on the reflections and gives yet another reading of the image. Like a crystal ball it reveals an image both seductive and alluring in its distortion. Adjacent the convex mirror is the record player from the Jazz Preservation Hall, not only reminding you that you are in the city where jazz was born but furthermore lending a moody, soulful soundtrack to your stay. Perhaps the room service is paired with a vintage vinyl.

Continuous surface
As a financial and industrial powerhouse, the city of Gurgaon is a hotbed of technological innovation. For Groupsoft's office space in Gurgaon, nemaworkshop found inspiration in the the company's specific organizational structure. Because Groupsoft emphasizes collaboration, a major component of the designs is the integration of communal spaces to accommodate informal meetings between team members. Central to the both proposed design are workstations optimized for teamwork.

In option 1, a continuous surface which defines the desk itself and the overhead structure. Catering to the young and energetic staff the design incorporates a gaming room and a lounge space, encouraging staff members to interact with their colleagues in more casual contexts.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/702988/G-09 copy copy_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/702988/G-09 copy copy_o.jpg" data-mid="3454495" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/702988/G-10 copy_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/702988/G-10 copy_o.jpg" data-mid="3451759" border="0" align="left"/>
Office topography
In option 2, the seating areas interrupt the giant work surfaces creating an immense cohesive topographical landscape. It integrates multiple types of seating and an enormous work surface which in turn serves as the connective tissue binding the communal areas. Ultimately the Groupsoft prototypes demonstrate that the physical working environment should reflect the underlying structure of the company.

With a buzzing location in the East Village, The Smith is opening a second location in the neighborhood of Turtle Bay, bringing with it the principles of good and honest American cuisine.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/15 for website_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/15 for website_o.jpg" data-mid="16349810" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/HIGHTOP_640.png" width="640" height="464" width_o="1080" height_o="783" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/HIGHTOP_o.png" data-mid="17583704" border="0" align="left"/>

Neighborhood: Turtle Bay

For its second location The Smith positioned itself in the Turtle Bay neighborhood. Since the 1960’s the area has attracted prominent figures including actress Katharine Hepburn, composer Stephen Sondheim, editor Maxwell Perkins, anchorman Walter Cronkite and writers E.B. White and Kurt Vonnegut. Still, what draws people to the area is the sense of community and the preservation of a residential character. Working within this particular social climate, the restaurant design needed to cater not only to its existing following but adapt to fit its new context.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/BAR_640.png" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/BAR_o.png" data-mid="17583036" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/PDR_640.png" width="640" height="464" width_o="1080" height_o="783" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/PDR_o.png" data-mid="17584233" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/02 for website_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/02 for website_o.jpg" data-mid="16342314" border="0" align="left"/>

High Volume

In addition to the new social context, the second major departure from the first location is the size. With a 270 seat capacity including a Private Dining Room with enormous skylights capable of holding 70 seated guests, it’s a high-volume restaurant. Thus the design challenge was: how to make a really big restaurant feel busy and vibrant? For starters, the bar is 60 feel long, a place to meet after work and linger. Adjacent, the hightop communal table contributes to the neighborhood atmosphere.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/MIRRORS_640.png" width="640" height="464" width_o="1080" height_o="783" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/MIRRORS_o.png" data-mid="17583319" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/LONG SHOT_640.png" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/LONG SHOT_o.png" data-mid="17583685" border="0" align="left"/>

Three New Yorks
“There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born there, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size, its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter--the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these trembling cities the greatest is the last--the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York’s high strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness, natives give it solidity and continuity, but the settlers give it passion."

-E. B. White "Here is New York" (1948)

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/EXT_640.png" width="640" height="464" width_o="1080" height_o="783" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/692625/EXT_o.png" data-mid="17583185" border="0" align="left"/>

Vibrancy + Energy

The dining room is subtly divided by long banquettes into more intimate zones. Inspired by the benches in nearby parks, the banquettes are made of wood slats yet adapted for comfortable dining with an upholstered leather seat. Meanwhile, the glistening tiles and the multiple mirrors create active surfaces where activity and movement are captured and then proliferate. Ultimately, the place buzzes with energy.

Secret Expressions
W Mexico City indulges in the chilango culture where luchadores mask natural identity in favor something surreal, fantastic and vibrant. It is a place of discovery and surprise, where secrets are expressed boldly and then concealed flirtatiously, as if belonging to a fantasy.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 19_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 19_o.jpg" data-mid="3067003" border="0" align="left"/>{image14}{image8}<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 13_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 13_o.jpg" data-mid="3067033" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 14_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 14_o.jpg" data-mid="3067035" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 16_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 16_o.jpg" data-mid="3067038" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 07_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 07_o.jpg" data-mid="3067018" border="0" align="left"/>
Discovery
Secrets are meant to be both concealed and discovered. The surprise of discovery is what makes them exciting. Secrets abound: drawers open and light shoots up, a banquet is cut showing it is stuffed with light, a pod opens or revolves to expose its secret function.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 06_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 06_o.jpg" data-mid="3067017" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 03_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 03_o.jpg" data-mid="3067011" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 17_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 17_o.jpg" data-mid="3067039" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 18_640.jpg" width="640" height="464" width_o="1440" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/50674/657337/W Mexico City 18_o.jpg" data-mid="3067040" border="0" align="left"/>
Floating sense of indeterminacy
It whisks guests into a world of possibility, where htey can expect the unexpected. The floating sense of indeterminacy is both palpable and thrilling. Like the W brand and the city itself, the hotel vibrates with energy . Secrets flicker and flash, creating an environment sparkling with social activity.
